lexAh, so much to talk about!
First, I hope you all know aboutspacehussy's weekly sketch request posts! They are fantastic. I missed out this week, alas, but I don't even care because all the sketches are AMAZING. I only got four hours of sleep last night (thanks, nightmares) so I was up for the end of her shift - she was a little worried she wouldn't be able to finish the Red Alert/Inferno picture, so I offered to step up and cover for her. And I drew this.
In other news, I helped my friend adopt a cat! We went to a shelter I've never visited before, and they are WONDERFUL. I'd like to link them but I'm paranoid about giving out identifying information so uh no. They do a personality matching process - you take a little survey of what your household is like, and they match you to a color-coded cat personality. My friend has a laid-back place with her brother, so she was looking at purple cats. Conveniently, this is her favorite color. XD We looked around at all the cats in the vary spacious and open shelter, and visited the colony rooms (where I got nailed by a cat pretty hard, but shrugged and said "I shoulda listened to her tail, I know better than that" and all the cat people around me just kinda nodded and said "yep, probably" and I washed up with alcohol and that was that. I love having friends who don't go OMG YOU'RE SCARRED FOR LIFE THAT CAT WAS OUT TO GET YOU IT'S SO VICIOUS HOW CAN THEY LET THINGS LIKE THIS HAPPEN.) and then we picked out two cats to sit in a private room with for a bit - and then a dude came up and was like HAVE YOU MET STRIDER YOU NEED TO MEET STRIDER. So we met Aragorn and Aragorn is a fucking awesome cat. He was like HELLOOOOO LADIES (even though one of our group was a guy) and proceeded to charm us into oblivion. My friend pretty much had her heart set on him right then and there. We sat with another cat for a bit, but this cat was so painfully, painfully shy that it was pretty much impossible to get to know her at all even though we sat with her quietly for at least an hour. (That's the other thing - we were not rushed AT ALL. A worker/volunteer came by now and then to check on us and answer questions about the cats and just chat for a bit, but we never ever felt rushed. Which is good, because we were looking specifically at shy cats.) So I looked at my friend and I was like, "Your heart is set on Aragorn, isn't it." And she was like, "Is it that obvious?"
And then. Then I insisted we meet Dude. Dude was handsome, and when I looked into his cage I thought, "She will love him." He wasn't doing anything, I couldn't even see his face, but something said "She will love him." It took a few minutes for him to warm up, but once he was sure the room was safe he head-butted and rubbed up against all of us. He was a big fellow, even bigger than giant Strider, and a beautiful marbled tabby. And I could tell she was still in love with Strider, but then. Then I knelt down to call him over and he happily ignored me in favor of sniffing the floor. And then my friend knelt down and he dashed over to her, adored her with his face, begged for belly-rubs, and then began to lick her hand with an expression of utter contentment. That cat fell in love with her right there in the most obvious fucking way. XD And I said, "My dear. You're so bringing home Dude today."
And she did. ♥
On the way to the car he wailed, as cats do. Once in the car, with her next to him and reaching in to pet him, he chilled out. He was, in fact, so chill that he almost fell asleep with his paws curled under him. He was the chillest cat I have ever seen in a car. He adores her. Which is good, because she totally fucking adores him.
It makes me so happy to see them together. She asked me to come with her to the vet too - she knows the vet she wants to go to, and they're wonderful (they're my vet too!) but she lost her previous cat there. He'd been her ONLY cat, with her family since she was a tiny child. She and that cat grew up together. I can totally understand why she needs emotional support to go back there. Also physical support, because Dude is GIANT AND HEAVY and she has difficulty carrying him. XDDD The carrier she bought beforehand is actually too small for him, but it's the larger version of my current carrier and I had exclaimed in the store how much I wanted it, so she offered to me at half price. Fuck yessssss. Now I just need to scrounge $20.
We have vague hopes of bringing Nostalgia over now and then to play, if they get along well. If they don't, he could crush her, so uh yeah. Careful introductions. Once he's fully settled in. XD
