BAD NEWS BOAT, FULL STEAM AHEAD

Okay so Nostalgia has a giant raging urinary tract infection. Like, she's peeing blood and passing blood clots, and I brought her to the emergency vet because uh PISSING BLOOD, NOT GOOD and that only cost $184 afjsdkjhfsd So anyway. She has antibiotics. They gave her an injection right there, and they were so nice and utterly sweet to her and talked me through all the diagnostics - I have had such good luck with vets. I really have. The vet I saw fell utterly in love with her and her adorableness and her huge eyes and her wobbly walk. ♥ They drew urine right out of her bladder to test for bacteria and he actually came out and showed it to me - it was not urine, let me say that. It was the unholy fluid of my nightmares. We looked at it for a minute and then he said "So yeah we'll take a look at that, probably see some red blood cells..." and then we both started giggling inappropriately. Soooo she's on 100% wet food until the antibiotics are done, at the very least, in the hopes of pushing that crap out of her. Poor darling. I might keep her on wet forever. :( I know she adores the Acana but it can be a treat for training - she's very treat-driven, it worked for her harness training. So that is my plan. I think it is a good plan. Treatment and preventative care. Yes. :( My poor Nostalgia.

...On the other hand, she's still insanely hyper and playful and I keep thinking if this is her in pain and miserable, what will she be like when she's comfortable? I guess we'll find out soon enough. :) ...After my trip. DID I MENTION THE TIMING OF THIS WHOLE MESS REALLY SUCKS.

She's so worth it.

...in other news I'm almost done a couple different short fics. This pleases me.

Did you know there's health care insurance for cats? Somewhere between $10 and $30 a month depending on how much you want to have covered and whether it's an indoor or outdoor cat. I don't know what the various places' policies are on preexisting conditions, you'd probably have to read the fine print, and maybe ask your vet about whether they've worked with pet health care insurers before -- my cat's insurance policy (24 Pet Care) doesn't cover the "standard" annual physical but does cover things like tests and x-rays, for example. If it'd be easier to come up with a small but every-monthly payment than unpredictable big payments, might be an angle to check out?

yessssss in my first draft of this entry (which was largely incoherent, lolz) I mentioned that I've been looking into pet insurances and have in fact just settled on one in particular. No one will cover anything to do with her spinal defects, but if she's prone to UTI it should cover that. It'll run me about $17 a month, which isn't bad at all, and has a yearly deductible instead of an every-visit deductible like one of the other popular insurances. But even if I'd bought the insurance right after adopting her, there's a 30 day wait before the illness coverage kicks in. My regular vet charges really reasonable rates, but for emergencies... Yeah. Ow. :( It's totally worth it, but owwww.

I hope so too! She seems to be doing a tiny bit better already. She really, really does not appreciate the antibiotics, though. Poor dear. At least it's something easily fixable! I was terrified it would be crystals or stones. Those are kind of a big deal. But an infection? Yeah, it's horrible and painful, but it can go away and stay gone. wooo~ \o/ And I know that just a few days on the antibiotics will have her feeling so much better.

Glad you were able to get her treated promptly. And hope she continues to mend!
